The main objective of the community eye care projects is to give holistic eye care services on an on-going premise all through the Trilochan Netralaya network. Taking into consideration the major barriers of accessibility and affordability of eye care services among the unreached communities, our outreach team aims towards bringing quality eye care services within the reach of the communities.
Through its three branches Trilochan Netralaya covers 16 districts of Odisha. It conducts free camps in the unprivileged part of Western Odisha, screens patients having cataract and brings them back to base hospital for surgery. Other patients who have different eye diseases are referred to base hospitals and treated accordingly at a subsidized price.
So far we have conducted 2000 plus free eye camps and operated around 124151 cataract patients.
Eyecare Beyond Odisha
Trilochan Netralaya was actively involved with lifeline express, a mobile hospital on wheels, which moves throughout India and provides health care to the unreachable people. Being associated with its ophthalmic wing trilochan Netralaya delivered its service in 8 states of India. In this project TN has restored sight to 7006 patients through 12 camps.
Eye care beyond country border
In 2016 we had gone to Srilanka for a cataract surgery camp which was organized by The Vision Mission, Singapore. In 2017 Dr Shiva and our paramedical team visited Cambodia to perform cataract surgery following which a clinical team from Cambodia came to Trilochan Netralaya for a month long training to upgrade their skills.
School Screening Camp
Refractive error is one of the common causes of poor vision in childhood. Indirectly it causes poor academic performance of children and increases their school dropout rates. Proper refraction and timely intervention in the form of a pair of glasses can solve this problem. Till date Trilochan Netralaya has screened 112 schools and distributed spectacles to school children at subsidized or free of cost.
Workplace refraction camp
We conduct refraction camps at various workplaces where we screen each and every worker for uncorrected refractive error and provide them spectacles which increase their productivity. Other minor eye ailments are also addressed.Industries and different fields of work that are likely to suffer because of employees with poor vision attributed to refractive error are prime targets for this kind of outreach camp.
Apart from cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are few major causes of blindness. It can only be prevented by creating awareness in the community. Trilochan Netralaya organizes diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma screening camps at various places of Sambalpur. It also conducts CMEs for physicians, pharmacists and lab technicians to make them aware about these blinding diseases. Apart from this, doctors from Trilochan Netralaya deliver awareness talks in different workplaces to make people understand about the course of the disease and the need for periodical eye check up. On occasion of World diabetes day, World sight day and World glaucoma week it organizes awareness rallies by involving different NGO and social organizations.
